ODE MkI 3kW servo winch

Servo motors offer relatively high power ratings in a more compact package compared to traditional NEMA-frame AC induction motors that A.G.O. tyipcally uses in the majority of winches with >2HP drivetrains. 

Servo motors also come with a built-in encoder to more easily facilitate built-in wire counting at the winch.  The servo motor driver also has a unique overload response that completely stops operations as soon as loads exceed the motor’s pull capabilities – an ideal feature for borehole applications that prevents the winch from accidentally stretching or breaking the cable if the probe suddenly becomes stuck.

The ODE MkI is a test platform winch built to experiment with implementing servo motors (and their electronics) as a potential future alternative drivetrain option for A.G.O. winches.

Caution:  The electric brake integrated into the servo motor is only rated to hold loads equal to the motor’s rated load capacity.  There is no safety factor between the winch’s rated pull loads and the electric brake’s holding capability.  Using the winch in marine applications may result in the brake slipping when the winch is stopped if heave forces exceed the nominal rated pull capabilities.

Features on this winch include:

    • Mechanically-driven level wind system for cable management (currently geared for use with cables ~0.322-0.33″ (8.18-8.41mm) in diameter)
    • Dog clutch for disengaging the powered drive train for freewheeling payout or manual recovery
    • Slip ring ready
    • Encoder and electric brake built into the servo motor
