Wire Payout Meters and Sheaves

A.G.O. manufactures mechanical and electronic wire counters for measuring cable / wire payout. Lightweight plastic sheaves and aluminum snatch blocks are available.

MWC-2 Mechanical Borehole Wire Counter

The MWC-2 wire counter is a portable meter used to measure the length of cable deployed down a drill hole. It is attached to the drill collar by three equally spaced clamping bolts that secure the counter firmly in place. The sheave wheel may be turned to allow clear access of tools into the drill hole.

  • standard 0.333 meter circumference sheave
  • groove machined to match clients' cable
  • mechanical counter in meters and decimeters, or optionally, in feet
  • easy to secure to drill collar with three bolts
  • swing motion allows clear access of tools into the drill hole
  • carrying handle

Options: Retractable cable roller to assist in keeping the cable on the sheave See video demonstration

EWC-4A

The EWC-4A wire counter is an up/down wire counter with both automatic and manual direction control functions and displays distance and speed. The electronics are mounted in a compact splash-resistant box. The length of cable out is displayed on line one of a two line LCD, with count to 5999.9 meters

  • stand alone up/down cable measuring system
  • display of payout speed
  • RS232 computer interface (NMEA format)
  • automatic and manual direction control function
  • works with magnetic encoded metering wheel such as PS06 counter sheave (4 decimeter circumference sheave pictured below), or S&R aluminum snatch block (e.g. 0.8 m circumference sheave). Larger blocks are also available.
  • housed in a watertight enclosure measuring 55 mm H x 160 mm L x 80 mm W

NMEA sentence format is:
$YXXDR,D,301.2,M,L,S,30.0,M,R*24[CR][LF]

$ = NMEA sentence delimiter (beginning of sentence).
YX = Talker device type is a Transducer.
XDR = The sentence formatter for a transducer measurement.
D = Measurement is a linear displacement.
301.2 = Actual measurement in meters.
M = Displacement measured in meters.
L = Transducer ID (Arbitrary letter, L chosen to signify "length").
S = Speed
30.0 = Actual measurement in meters/min
M = Measurement in meters/min
R = Rate
* = NMEA sentence delimiter (end of sentence).
24 = Checksum (EXOR of all characters between but not including the "$" and "*" characters, reported as a 2 digit hexadecimal number).
[CR][LF] = Carriage Return and Line Feed characters (Decimal 13 followed by Decimal 10).

Suggested Uses: Oceanographic applications, geophysics, etc.

Magnetic Encoded Sheave Blocks

A.G.O. produces several models of magnetic encoded sheave blocks based on commercial sheaves. The selection of the correct sheave is based upon the minimum bend diameter of your cable, which the running diameter of the sheave must exceed. Using a sheave with a running diameter smaller than your minimum bend diameter may cause premature wear of your cable.

For use with small diameter (nominally 1/8" / 3mm) wire line, we manufacture the PS06 magnetic encoded sheave block. Based on a trolling block from Loomis Sales, this block is rated to a maximum breaking strength of 2500 pounds / 1134 kg with a running diameter of 6 inches / 15 cm. It can be used with wire line cables up to 1/4" in diameter.

For use with all types of cable we offer modified versions of the Sherman & Reilly Series 74 and Series 78 cast aluminum snatch blocks. The sheave wheels of these blocks are coated with polyurethane for reducing slippage and the snatch block facility allows the cable to be fed onto the block easily.

Sherman & Reilly magnetic encoded sheave blocks are available in the following sizes:

SR10:   Max Working Load: 6500 lbs / 2950 kg   Running Diameter: 7.938" / 20 cm
SR12:   Max Working Load: 6500 lbs / 2950 kg   Running Diameter: 9.875" / 25 cm
SR14:   Max Working Load: 7500 lbs / 3400 kg   Running Diameter: 12.25" / 31 cm
SR16:   Max Working Load: 9000 lbs / 4090 kg   Running Diameter: 14" / 35 cm
SR20:   Max Working Load: 12000 lbs / 5450 kg   Running Diameter: 16.25" / 41cm
SR22:   Max Working Load: 12000 lbs / 5450 kg   Running Diameter: 18.125" / 46 cm
SR28:   Max Working Load: 12000 lbs / 5450 kg   Running Diameter: 24" / 60 cm
