Slip Rings FAQ

What are slip rings?

Slip rings can be used in any electromechanical system requiring unrestrained, continuous rotation while transmitting power and/or data from a stationary to a rotating structure. A slip ring is also called rotary electrical interface, collector, swivel or rotary joint.

What types of slip rings are available?

Prosper slip rings include Capsule modules which are small and designed for integration into other systems that provide weather protection, Through-Hole modules which allow pipes or axles to pass through the centre of the slip ring and Sealed models like those pictured below. The smallest Capsule modules are 12mm diameter and 18mm long; the largest Through-Hole modules can be as much as 1m or more in diameter.

Marine Applications

A.G.O. supplied slip rings are well suited for use in marine environments. Housed in a marine-grade stainless steel housing with water-resistant seals, they are ideal for use on signal winches and for other marine applications where rotation of signal or power conductors is required.

These slip rings are supplied with single cable output (500 mm. long) or with connectors depending on circuit configuration (max 48 conductors). The standard mounting comes with rotor-side flange and stator anti-rotation system.

AGO is now having these slip rings manufactured with SEACON-BRANTNER MCBH-8 and MCBH-12 subsea connectors. These versions give peace of mind about salt water exposure and temporary immersion from waves breaking over the deck, and are directly compatible with many sidescan sonar systems and other oceanographic instruments.
